Flying Just for Fun Today

I needed a break from flying lessons and wanted to go up and just fly for the fun of it again.  Sometimes flight instruction gets to be a lot like work and awfully stressful. So I asked for a chance to just go fly again, get away and remember what I fell in love with about flying. I was beginning to go stir crazy practicing the pattern.  I call it “Nascar Flying” because all you’re doing is left hand turns around the airport and landing.

As soon as I was airborne and out of the pattern, I felt the tension in my shoulders relax.  I exhaled and breathed a sigh of relief as I looked around at the best view in town.  The weather was amazing.  It was a little cooler than it had been during the week.  There were some cumulus clouds off in the distance but my route was taking me east this afternoon towards Lake Tillery just past Albemarle, NC. I hadn’t flown this route before and I was amazed at all the farmland below us.  I asked Robert to point out things so I’d know where we were as we went along our path this afternoon.

As we got near the lake, he showed me where Morrow Mountain http://www.ncparks.gov/Visit/parks/momo/main.php was just to our left side in the distance.  I hiked there a few weeks ago, so this was an incredible view from up here.  We were crusing at about 110 mph. Looking around at the beautiful landscape brought a smile to my face and joy to my heart.  It’s absolutely breath taking on days like this, and it just fills me with a sense of wonder like when I was a kid, and saw something for the very first time.  I still get that feeling every time I go up.  It’s incredible and there is nothing else like it.

I brought my Canon Rebel with me to see what kind of pictures I can get with it today instead of just my iPhone.  I figured it was about time I took up the Rebel and put it to good use.  I’m so glad I brought it, even though I need some work on taking pictures from the air.  It still took some great shots that I’m excited to share with you.

Parts of Lake Tillery http://www.stanlycvb.com/lakebadinlaketillery.html run through the Uwharrie National Forest.  I haven’t been to this lake before but I have heard of it and passed by it from time to time.  It’s beautiful from the air and seems to run on endlessly.

Today was a breath of fresh air, a time to renew my heart and help me get a way for a day and just enjoy myself.  I love to fly.  There is nothing else that I’ve ever done that moves me like it does.  It’s incredible and when I’m away from it, I long to be back in the air.

I’ll keep practicing but at least now I know that from time to time, it does me good to just take in the view.
